Venue: Biggar Gaswork Museum For upwards of 130 years – from 1839 to 1973 – Biggar Gasworks made coal-gas for the town and surrounding district. It was one of the first small-town gasworks to open in Scotland, and among the last to close. It is the only preserved gasworks left in Scotland. Not long afterwards, it passed into State care, to be preserved as a lasting reminder of an industry that provided so much benefit to all the country’s citizens. During the 'Steam Days' the boiler will be operating and driving various items of steam driven machines associated with gas production and distribution. Rather than become a barrier, the Antonine Wall became a spine of communications across central Scotland. A monastery and village were set up at Kinneil, Bo’ness.Thane’s Hall was established at Callendar Park, Falkirk. The Wall site also saw the establishment of the town of Falkirk itself (which celebrates the monument on its coat of arms). Historian Geoff Bailey will explain all in this free afternoon talk. Memories Roadshow Bring along old family photos taken in Cumbernauld or the surrounding area and share your memories of growing up in the town with Scotland's Urban Past (SUP). We will digitise any photographs for you and your contributions will help to create a full record of Cumbernauld's local history in the National Archive of the Historic Environment and the Tower Block Project's image archive. All physical images are returned on the day after being scanned. Exhibition The exhibition itself will look at Cumbernauld from it’s inception, as the result of mass overcrowding in Glasgow, and the vision of Cumbernauld as a New Town and a site of opportunity for residents and businesses alike. Using photographs, advertising material, letters and plans from the 1950s through to the 1990s, visitors can explore the ways in which the town was envisioned and run by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation, as well as shaped and experienced by those who made the move there. The exhibition will pay special attention to the work of Brian Miller, Cumbernauld’s town artist from 1962, and the public art which he created, much of which has now disappeared. Exploring Cumbernauld Cumbernauld resident Jean O’Reilly will also be running free guided social history walks, which will leave from Cumbernauld Community Enterprise Centre throughout the day. Over the weekend of the 24 - 25 September, the flats above Cumbernauld shopping centre will also be open to the public for the first time in decades, giving visitors a rare glimpse at the housing intended for Cumbernauld's elite. Venue: Castlecary Fort Site Join archaeologist Geoff Bailey as he leads a guided walk along the line of the Antonine Wall: leaving the site of Castlecary Roman Fort, near the village of Allandale, heading towards the village of Castlecary in North Lanarkshire. The walk will go along the World Heritage Site, through the Westerwood Golf Course, and on to Dullatur. Returning by the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath. The round trip will be around 9 miles. Venue: Coldstream Scottish Borders Walking Festival This is the battle of Flodden (1513) commemoration day and the walk starts at Branxton (Flodden) memorial car park. The memorial is only 400 yards away. The walk takes in a probable escape route for Scottish soldiers escaping from the battle field. We take in Moneylaws hill, Downham, Piper's Lonnen and Learmouth, before passing through Cornhill and on to Coldstream. The walk entails an initial climb-off path, the remainder of the walk is undulating but with a section of the old railway line. Possible finish for those who wish to end their walk at Cornhill shop. Venue: 21 Fountain Road, Bridge of Allan FK9 4AY Stirling Council St Saviour’s, Bridge of Allan started in 1854, when a handful of people came together to form a congregation of the Scottish Episcopal Church ( ‘Piskies’ ). John Henderson was the architect of the original church on a Tractarian ( Oxford Movement ) early decorated nave & chancel formula and even the rectory next to the church was designed in a matching neo-gothic style with trefoil headed windows. On entering the church there is a fine font, made by William Pirret of Glasgow in 1873 & St Saviour’s also has particularly attractive stained glass. The piece de resistance is the West Window, believed to be designed by Robert Anning Bell and made at Stephen Adam Studio, Glasgow in 1922. In 2006 a member of the congregation, Malcolm Allan, wrote a book called, St Saviour’s at 150 - these are available at the back of the church which gives considerably more information about St Saviour’s. Venue: 12 Keir Street Stirling Council This Category B Listed building was built in 1860 to designs by James Henderson, it was later enlarged by Robert Baldie. The church contains furnishings designed in 1904 by the eminent Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There is an attractive timber roof and excellent stained glass windows and an organ by Lewis dating from 1884. The tour will start from the ‘Roman’ Bridge over the Esk in Musselburgh, and take the route followed by the Scottish forces in the approach to their fateful encounter with the invading English Royal army. The walk will end at the battlefield Memorial Stone off Salter’s Road, Wallyford, in time for the annual commemoration ceremony of the battle, led by the Old Musselburgh Club. Venue: Boyd Orr Building, University Avenue Glasgow Archaeological Society The coach will leave from outside the Boyd Orr Building, University Avenue at 8.30 a.m. After a brief stop en-route we should arrive at Cragside House, approximately 12 miles south of Alnwick, in time for lunch. Members may bring their own packed lunch or enjoy a meal or snack in one of the tearooms in the Visitor Centre. In the early afternoon we shall begin our tour of Cragside House, the extraordinary home of the Tyneside industrialist and innovator Sir William Armstrong. In 1878 it was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Cragside House is now in the ownership of the National Trust and after a tour of this fascinating house members will have the opportunity of exploring the extensive grounds including woodlands, formal gardens, lakes and rocky crags. Later in the afternoon our coach will head for the modern day village of Milfield. Here, in Anglo-Saxon times was the royal township of Maelmin. At this site we’ll be able to view a series of reconstructions of local archaeological structures. We should arrive back in Glasgow approximately 8.00 p.m. Sturdy shoes are recommended. Places on the coach are limited and priority will be given to Society Members although non-members can be accommodated subject to a modest supplementary charge. Come and visit this beautiful Category B Listed building. Built in 1902 by Messrs B Reynolds, a number of alterations have been made to this building, most recently the main hall has been refurbished with aid of a grant from CCF and now has a wellinsulated hall with underfloor heating supplied from an efficient heat exchange system. Venue: North shore of The Loch of Yarrows Joseph Anderson came to be considered by many to be the father of Scottish archaeology. He was one time editor of the John O’Groat Journal from 1860 to 1869. During that time he became fascinated by the many prehistoric monuments in and about the Yarrows area. In 1865 he began a series of excavations along with Robert Shearer factor of the Thrumster Estate which came to lay the foundations of our understanding of Neolithic and early Bronze age burial practices. The celebration will culminate on August 29th with a prehistoric festival on the north shore of The Loch of Yarrows. Special Events 10 am to 11 am help prepare a roe deer for a pit roasting - sample cooked meat when ready. 11:30 am to 12 take a guided tour of Battle Moss stone rows; hear about the excavation. 11 am to 12 try your hand at flint knapping. !2 noon to 1 pm watch the lighting of the pit kiln for firing the pots made by the school children also watch the unpacking of a previous pit firing. 1:15 photo competition winners announced. 1:30 to 2 pm try your hand a dying wool with woad. 2 pm to 3 pm help work the furnace bellows and add copper ore to the copper smelting furnace; see the new copper emerge. 2:30 pm take a guided tour to see the Neolithic chambered cairns and Iron Age broch at south Yarrows Festival Climax Evening event Fire performance and music focused on the burning of a timber monument, a replica ofna chambered cairn facade. Specialists in the area's natural and cultural heritage, as well as some of the people who have been closely involved in delivering the projects, will be on hand to tell us more as we go. We start the day looking at the factors that led to the Union of the Parliaments in 1707 and then at the dramatic experience of the two Jacobite uprisings. This century also became famed as the Age of Enlightenment. East Lothian led the way in new agricultural improvements, the rise of the stately homes and their grand designed landscapes, and the County was also very important in Scotland’s industrial history and legacy.
